LOS ANGELES (KFWB/AP) 10.04.02, 11:10a -- A Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded $28 billion today to Betty Bullock, 64, of Newport Beach, who started smoking when she was 17 and was diagnosed last year with lung cancer that has since spread to her liver. Last month, the jury ordered the tobacco company to pay Bullock $750,000 in economic damages and $100,000 for pain and suffering.

Damn. I think I will sue my parents for teaching me not to smoke and thereby depriving me of this level of economic gain. I wonder if its too late to start smoking? < /sarcasm> |

Wow! $28 Billion to a smoker who is still alive, and who smoked voluntarily, but only $3 million to the surviving family of a wrong address, no drugs were found, no-knock jackbooted thug SWAT raid
murder victim, in which the city attorney will "formerly apologize" without, however, admitting any wrongdoing whatsoever.

I can see it now: in the near future, the Forbes 400 will contain half a dozen sick smokers who've done honest blue-collar work all their lives. "Son, I never trusted the stock market. I made my money the old fashioned way. Pass me that pack of menthols and I'll tell you about it ..."

It will be interesting to see if states start passing protection for the tobacco industry in order to protect the revenue stream from the Tobacco Settlement. Will their own grubbing for money trump the influence of the palintiff bar?

$28BN? This is so wrong for so many reasons. The really sick part is that the lawyers are getting so rich.

Get this - Newport Beach is a wealthy part of town in Orange County. I'm sure that $28B will come in handy for aesthetic upgrades, such as facelifts, etc.

Yeah, then if they get low on funds, they can go back and sue the plastic surgeons for malpractice.

This jury is wacko...completely and totally wacko. Something like this happened a few years back but I don't think it was anywhere near 28 BILLION dollars. This state is FULL of complete and total wackos. This means nothing. GO MO!!!

If I were the owner of one of the tobacco companies, I would simply claim bankrupcy, close my doors, and move overseas. ALL of the tobacco companies should protest this by refusing to do business in the U.S.
That would mean the loss of probably $300 BILLION (maybe much more)in tax money to the state and federal governments.

Lest we forget, this is the same jury pool that said "Not Guilty" re: the esteemed Mr. Simpson!

If more than $1 million is actually paid it will be an absolute joke.

Why stop with $28 billion ($28,000,000,000)
Why not $28,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000?
To: SheLion
Ping.
I don't know if I believe this, however.
To: TamiPie
$750,000 + $100,000 adds up to $850,000. Where does the figure of $28B come from? Sounds like another journalist who can't do simple math.
